The fall color in the Canaan Valley and Dolly Sods region of West Virginia is more diverse than other locations in the Appalachian Mountains due the presence of heath barrens and boreal bogs. Much of the flora is classified as sub-arctic tundra. This region is one of the three best in North America for viewing fall colors. The others are New Hampshire/Vermont and northern Michigan.
